Egress Window FAQs

Code requires a minimum 5.7 square feet of opening, with at least 20" width and 24" height. The sill can't be more than 44" from the floor.

Casement windows are most common as they provide the largest clear opening. Some sliders can qualify. The key is meeting the minimum opening requirements.

Existing windows rarely meet egress requirements. If you're creating a bedroom, you need at least one code-compliant egress window for that room.
