Basement Flooring FAQs

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is the most popular choice — waterproof, comfortable underfoot, installs over concrete without a subfloor, and looks like wood or stone. Tile works well in high-moisture areas like bathroom spaces. Carpet is common in bedroom and rec room areas when moisture control is solid.

Solid hardwood is not recommended in below-grade spaces — concrete moisture causes warping and cupping over time. Engineered hardwood with a thick veneer is more stable than solid but still requires a dry slab. LVP is the more durable choice for most basements.

Yes. We test for moisture vapor transmission and level any high spots. Slabs with moisture issues get a vapor barrier before any flooring goes down. Skipping this step leads to flooring failure within a few years.

LVP and tile can install directly on a level concrete slab. Carpet typically uses a foam underlayment. Engineered hardwood and some floating floor systems benefit from a sleeper or subfloor system that creates an air gap from the concrete.
