Peak Builders designs and builds custom decks across San Diego County — composite, redwood, cedar, and tropical hardwood, from single-level backyard decks to multi-level decks with pergolas, built-in seating, and outdoor kitchens. Licensed California contractor (CSLB #1008986), fully insured.
What decking material is best for San Diego's climate?
San Diego's sun and coastal salt air are hard on natural wood, so material choice matters:
- Composite (Trex, TimberTech) — capped composite resists fading, moisture, and insects, and needs no sealing. It's our most-recommended decking for SD: a composite deck lasts 25–30+ years versus roughly 10–15 for untreated wood, and the lifetime maintenance cost is far lower.
- Redwood & cedar — beautiful, naturally rot-resistant, but need cleaning and sealing every 2–3 years to hold up to UV.
- Tropical hardwood (ipe) — extremely dense and long-lasting; a premium natural option.
Near the coast we steer most homeowners to capped composite or a sealed hardwood because salt air weathers softwoods quickly.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in San Diego?
In most San Diego jurisdictions a permit is required for a deck more than 30 inches above grade, any deck attached to the house, or one with a roof/pergola structure. We pull the permit, handle engineering when required, and schedule the inspections.
Design that fits how you live outside
We build the deck around how you'll use it — dining, lounging, a hot tub, or an outdoor kitchen — with railings, built-in benches, planters, low-voltage lighting, and shade structures designed to match your home.
